Human Communication D-5 >> Presentation Day

Verbal Messages are sent with words. It's important to remember that the word verbal refers to words, not to orality; verbal message consist of both oral and written words. First, we need to understand six key principles of verbal message: (1) meaning are in people, (2) language is denotative and connotative, (3) meanings depend on context, (4) message vary in politeness, (5) message vary in assertiveness, (6) message can deceive.

Language is Denotative and Connotative. Denotative refers to the meaning you'd find in a dictionary; it's the meaning that members of the culture assign to a word.

Connotative refers to the emotional meaning that specific speakers-listeners give to a word. Words have have both kind of meaning. For example, when a person uses the word, “father,” it will not be value free. A father may connote various other thoughts and feelings such as kindness, severity, love, or abuse. Therefore, in interpreting a text, it will be important to ask what words connote in that particular context. Also it will be important to realize that words can connote very different notions with a change in time and place.

For example, if we look at the term rose. The denotation is that it is a red, wild flower. If we look at the connotations, we naturally associate a rose with Valentine's Day or romance and courting.

In The Miracle Worker, the director have show that how the Helen Keller's life with Annie Sullivan.  This film portraying real human courage, patience and individual, personal will.

Helen, the age of six child who has lost her sight and hearing, fumbles in the a silent and dark world. She is a savage child, gobbling food with he hands off  any plate that she want to invade around the family dinner table, even wrestling a young playmate to the ground and attacking her with scissors until Annie Sullivan walks into her life and turns on the light by bringing language in her hands. This story is based on the true story of Helen Keller and her remarkable teacher, Annie Sullivan. The story is beautifully told, depicting on one hand the power struggle of the wills between the two women as Annie seeks to bring language to Helen who doesn't even know what words are.

beginning with "d-o-l-l" for the doll that Anne Sullivan had brought Keller as a present

Anne Sullivan was making on the palm of her hand, while running cool water over her other hand, symbolized the idea of "water"

This movie is great just as a movie but when you think about the obstacles that Helen Keller overcame and the way in which she lived her life, the movie becomes something for us to apply to our own lives. What are the obstacles we are fighting to hold onto and what are the possibilities if we give up the control and learn? No matter how young or how old we are, there's a lesson in this movie for everyone.

Information of Helen Keller :

Human Communication Chapter 3 >> Listening , Chapter 6 >> Non verbal communication

Every day we are listening to all around our family, friends, teachers, strangers, and even listen to music also belongs. I can't imagine if we live without listening. According to the International Listening Association, listing is "the process of receiving, construing meaning from, and responding to spoken and or non-verbal massages" (Emmert, 1994). Therefore, listening to what others say is a sign of respect and courtesy. It is feeling good when someone remember something you said. Whether it was something from yesterday, a week ago or .... It's just like " Wow, you actually listen to me."  I Love that feeling !

Nonverbal communication is communication without words. Everyday, we respond to thousand on nonverbal cues an behavior including postures, facial expression, eye gaze, gesture, and tone of voice. Nonverbal detail reveal who we are and impact how we relate to other people. For example, a look of surprise is easily identified by its widened eyes and gaping mouth. When something unexpected occurs, our eyes widen and our pupils grow in order t take in our surrounding more fully and react more quickly.

Human Communication Chapter 2 >> Perception

Perception is the impression that other give you and what you project to other. Perception is a continuous process of life. Here are the three perception process : (1) Sensory stimulation occurs ; (2) Sensory stimulation is organized ; (3) Sensory stimulation is interpreted-evaluated. For example, you recognize your favourite food by its aroma and the way it look. You recognize a watermelon by it round shape, citrus flavour and so on. It is through these sensory experiences that we interact with and interpret things in our world. Interpreting and recognizing sensory information, such as such and smells, are all a part of perception.

The Lecturer have showed some picture that have mystery inside the picture like below :

Three or Four ?

You can see how many people ?

What is the Halo Effect? Our first impression of the attractiveness of an individual affect how we view that person holistically. This is a phenomenon known as the halo effect. For example, a tall or good-looking person will be perceived as being intelligent and trustworthy, even thought there is no logical reason to believe that height or look correlate with smarts and honesty. Therefore, in my opinion the first impression is very important.

Human Communication Chapter 1

To be honest I do not like the presentation or self-introduction in-front of everybody. It make me feel scared and nervous to face everyone so that Human Communication is a one that likely new to me. From the lecture class I have learn about the area of human communication: intrapersonal communication, interpersonal communication, small group & organization communication, public communication, mass communication. In fact, I'm more interested in intrapersonal communication. This is because though intrapersonal communication  I talk with, learn about, and judge myself. It is can also help for improving problem solving, increasing self-control, reducing stress and some more.

Culture is everything that members of that group have produced and developed  — their way of behaving and ways of thinking and so on. For example, showing the thumb held upwards means in Latin American, especially Brazil, but also in many other countries "everything's OK", while it is understood in some Islamic countries as well as Sardinia as a rude sexual sign. Furthermore, the sign of thumb up may signify the number "one" in France and a few other central European countries.

Before the lecturer end the class he has asked us a question was about a group of deaf and mute & a group of blind, how can they communicate? The lecturer was answer that they sent a message through a third person to help actually the answer was surprise me. I hope the next lessons would be more interesting.
